WOW! SOME REALLY NEAT STUFF TO DO IN PORTLAND!

Portland may not have the best weather in January and February, but there are spectacular events scheduled. Here are several....

First, there's the music. The Oregon Symphony Pops Concert at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall presents the "Legends of Swing" on Jan. 26-28. The show pays tribute to Nelson Riddle and his music, which propelled singers like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Fitzgerald, Martin and Garland to tHE top of the charts.

Then, from Feb. 15-24, comes the Portland Jazz Festival, with a host of stars performing at various downtown Portland venues. For jazz aficionados, this is a series of events absolutely not to be missed. There are far too many big-name performers, as well as some lesser known but still very talented newcomers, to list here, so check the event out at www.pdxjazz.com Then come and enjoy.

There's also Cajun music (Jan. 19) and flamenco (Jan. 23) at the Aladdin Theater, if these are more in keeping with your tastes. Dance is also featured at Portland State University from Jan 24-26 with a special presentation by choreographer Josie Mosely and Portland's finest dancers.

In keeping with the winter season, "Stars on Ice" comes to the Rose Garden on Feb. 2 with performances by Sasha Cohen, Olympic silver medalist, special giuest star Ilia Kulik and a large cast of Olympic, world and national champions. The show's co-creator is Scott Hamilton, one of the most famous names in ice skating.

Interested in antiques and collectibles? On Jan. 19-20, the Clark County Fairgrounds Event Center, a very short jaunt across the Columbia River from Portland, will be filled with 500 booths filled with treasures from the 1880's to the 1970's.

Finally, there's the huge "Walking With Dinosaurs -- The Live Experience" show at the Rose Quarter from Jan. 16-19. This event is so spectacular it's difficult to describe. Based on the immensely popular BBC series, the huge beasts are presented in actual size, each of them weighing more than 1-1/2 tons and powered by three operators, a driver, and two persons to realistically manipulate the tail, head and facial expressions by remote control. You're going to have to witness this show to believe it.
